YourMITOVIT® Device for Hypoxia Training

WHAT IS HYPOXIC TRAINING?

The MITOVIT® hypoxia training device is an innovative training system designed to harness the health and performance benefits of hypoxia. Hypoxia training, also known as high-altitude training, is based on the controlled reduction of the oxygen content in the inhaled air, which can trigger positive physiological adaptive responses in the body.

Who is hypoxia training suitable for?

Our hypoxia training is an ideal complement for people who want to improve their health and enhance their ability to recover. Clinics, health centers, and wellness facilities also benefit from the innovative technology of the MITOVIT® device.

Our target audience therefore includes health-conscious individuals, athletes, and professionals in the health and wellness sector who wish to benefit from the many advantages of hypoxia training.

How is hypoxia training conducted?

Participants lie down in a relaxed position and breathe through a breathing mask, alternating between low-oxygen high-altitude air (9–18%), high-oxygen air (30%), and normal lowland air (21%). The MITOVIT® device simulates altitudes ranging from 1,200 m to 6,750 m and adjusts individually to the user’s fitness level. Within about 40 minutes, participants complete an intensive program that mimics ascending and descending in the mountains— without any physical exertion. For optimal results, 10–15 sessions with 2–3 sessions per week are recommended.

NOBEL PRIZE IN MEDICINE FOR RESEARCH ON HYPOXIA

In 2019, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to three scientists: William Kaelin, Gregg Semenza, and Peter Ratcliffe. They discovered molecular mechanisms that enable cells to measure oxygen levels and recognize when adaptive responses are necessary.

Hypoxia, in particular, is thought to trigger positive responses that help the body supply all organs and organ systems with sufficient oxygen. As early as his 2012 publication, Gregg Semenza was able to document the influence of hypoxia on mitochondrial function and demonstrate that, under hypoxic conditions, apoptosis of weakened mitochondria is accelerated while the formation of new mitochondria is stimulated.

MITOVIT® HYPOXIA TRAINING

In practice,MITOVIT® hypoxia training takes place in a relaxed setting while the patient is lying down. The treatment is considered pleasant, and many people find that they relax and fall asleep during it.

Unlike altitude training for athletes, hypoxic training generally does not involve any physical activity. To mimic the effects of physical exertion, MITOVIT® hypoxic training uses a significantly reduced oxygen concentration. Athletes typically train at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters, which corresponds to an atmospheric oxygen concentration of about 16%.

Athletes looking for a supplement to boost their performance should perform hypoxia training with MITOVIT® during moderate physical activity, such as cycling or running on a treadmill.

The Fully Automated Hypoxia Test

For your personalized, optimal workout settings

The most commonly used hypoxia training programs—which consist of a 5-minute training phase followed by a 3-minute recovery phase over a period of approximately 40 minutes—are proven in practice and safe. Nevertheless, users react very differently to the low-oxygen, high-altitude air. Each person has an individual hypoxia threshold, meaning that some people experience a decrease in hemoglobin oxygen saturation sooner than others.

The fully automated hypoxia test included in the MITOVIT® system therefore determines the user’s individual hypoxia threshold during the first session. It is important here to acclimate the subject to hypoxia slowly and gently.

The goal is to determine the initial oxygen concentration that results in blood oxygen saturation below 90%. A physiological effect of hypoxia training can only be expected below this value. Only in individuals with severe exhaustion, pronounced mitochondrial damage, or severe internal medical conditions is it not necessary to lower the level below 90% at the start.

The participant lies down comfortably on a lounger and is given a personal breathing mask. During the approximately 40-minute session, they breathe, in alternating cycles of 3–5 minutes, oxygen-reduced “high-altitude” air (hypoxia 18–9%) and oxygen-rich air (hyperoxia 30%) or normal valley air (21%).

Athletes who want to improve their performance should perform hypoxia training at a moderate intensity, such as on an ergometer. Set the hypoxia level to 18–13% oxygen, depending on your fitness level.

To ensure optimal safety during hypoxia training, MITOVIT® uses two pulse oximeters that simultaneously record and compare SpO2 levels.

Benefits ofMITOVIT® Hypoxia Training

The MITOVIT® Interval Hypoxia Trainer is one of the most advanced altitude training devices on the market. It is easy to use, allows for quick visual monitoring of your workout, and provides integrated real-time HRV measurement with a display of parasympathetic activity. In addition to the two well-known training modes—hypoxia/normoxia (IHT) and hypoxia/hyperoxia (IHHT)—MITOVIT® offers a world-first innovation that makes hypoxia training even more efficient: adaptive hyperoxia. This means that the oxygen level is adjusted in real time during training to suit your individual needs, in order to optimally support the training effect. And it’s all made in Germany.

THREE MODES TO CHOOSE FROM—
: THE BENEFITS OF ADAPTIVE HYPEROXIA

Hypoxia / Normoxia (IHT): Interval training with
hypoxic and normoxic air.

Advantage: During the training phase (hypoxia), oxygen saturation quickly drops back into the training range (below 90% SPO2) because there is no supersaturation. This ensures that the training stimulus provided by hypoxia is utilized optimally.

Disadvantage: During the recovery phase (normoxia), it takes longer for the initial oxygen saturation in the blood to be restored. The recovery time is not utilized optimally. Some users are even unable to reach the SpO2 level they had before the workout during normoxia.

Hypoxia / Hyperoxia (IHHT): Interval training with
hypoxic and hyperoxic air

Advantage: During the recovery phase (hyperoxia), initial blood oxygen saturation is quickly restored. Recovery time is utilized optimally.

Disadvantage: During the training phase (hypoxia), it takes longer for oxygen saturation to return to the training range (below 90% SPO2) because supersaturation may be present. The effective training time can therefore be significantly shortened using the hyperoxia setting. In addition, prolonged hyperoxia administration can lead to increased oxidative stress, which can be detrimental to severely debilitated individuals.

Adaptive hyperoxia automatically adjusts the oxygen concentration, combines the advantages of both methods, avoids their disadvantages, increases the efficiency of hypoxia training, enhances training outcomes, minimizes oxidative stress, and improves user satisfaction.

At the start of the recovery phase, hyperoxic air is administered until blood oxygen saturation reaches 99% (adjustable between 93% and 99% SpO2). This ensures optimal use of the recovery time.

Afterward, normoxic air is breathed for the remainder of the recovery phase to prevent oxygen supersaturation. This ensures that the subsequent training phase is not unnecessarily shortened. Blood oxygen saturation quickly returns to the training range. The training stimulus provided by hypoxia is utilized optimally. In addition, oxidative stress is reduced to a minimum while ensuring rapid resaturation, since hyperoxia is maintained only until the set SpO₂ value is reached.
