What is hypoxia training at home?

Hypoxia training—also known as high-altitude training or interval hypoxia-hyperoxia training (IHHT)—refers to a method in which the oxygen content of the air being breathed is reduced in a controlled, intermittent manner. A home hypoxia device simulates high-altitude conditions by having you breathe “thinner” air for short periods. Through this controlled reduction in oxygen, the body can react similarly to how it would on a mountain peak— with natural adaptive responses, but without physical exertion.

Simply put, hypoxia training allows you to do high-altitude training at home: Instead of traveling to high mountains or engaging in intense exercise, you comfortably breathe in air with varying oxygen levels while sitting or lying down. The method is inspired by the thin air of the mountains but takes place in a quiet environment. This allows even non-athletes and busy people to benefit from the principles of altitude training—designed for your everyday life, without any strenuous workouts.

How does hypoxia training at home with the MITOCUBE® work?

The MITOCUBE® is a compact hypoxia training device for home use that automatically simulates altitude changes ranging from 1,200 to 6,750 meters —comparable to an ascent from the foothills of the Alps to Mount Kilimanjaro. Through a breathing mask, you inhale oxygen-reduced air (hypoxia, e.g., 9–18% O₂) and oxygen-rich air (hyperoxia, e.g., normal room air up to 30% O₂) at intervals. These alternating oxygen phases are controlled fully automatically by the device, without requiring any manual intervention on your part. All you need to do is press “Start”—the MITOCUBE® takes care of the rest.

  • At the start of each session, the system performs a hypoxia test.
  • This process determines your individual response to high-altitude air, and the workout automatically adapts to your personal starting level. This ensures that the session is safe, comfortable, and effective.
  • The treatment is performed in a relaxed position—either sitting or lying down—and lasts about 40 minutes.
  • In the meantime, you can, for example, listen to music or just relax. The process is quiet, comfortable, and requires no physical effort.

For those who are physically active, a sports mode is also available: This mode allows the device to be used during moderate exercise—such as on an exercise bike or treadmill—and makes the MITOCUBE® a flexible addition to your daily routine for hypoxia training at home.

Its modern design, intuitive controls, and quiet operation make the MITOCUBE® an excellent companion for home use—whether as a regular ritual or a targeted relaxation session in between.

Scientifically grounded: Based on Nobel Prize-winning research

In 2019, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to William Kaelin, Gregg Semenza, and Peter Ratcliffe. The researchers discovered how cells measure oxygen levels and trigger appropriate adaptations when changes occur. These findings form the basis for modern hypoxia training—as is also used in the MITOCUBE®.

Under hypoxic conditions, it has been shown, among other things, that the formation of new mitochondria—the so-called powerhouses of our cells—is stimulated and that dysfunctional cells are broken down more quickly. These cellular processes are specifically stimulated by alternating oxygen phases (hypoxia/hyperoxia)—a principle that the MITOCUBE® utilizes.

The participant lies down comfortably on a couch and is given a personalized breathing mask. During the approximately 40-minute session, you alternate between breathing oxygen-reduced “high-altitude” air (hypoxia, 18–9%) for 3–5 minutes and oxygen-rich air (hyperoxia, 30%) or normal valley air (21%).

Athletes who want to improve their performance should perform hypoxic training at a moderate intensity, such as on an ergometer. Set the hypoxia level to 18–13% oxygen, depending on your fitness level.

To ensure optimal safety during hypoxia training, MITOCUBE® uses two pulse oximeters that simultaneously record and compare SpO2 levels.

Frequently Asked Questions About Home Hypoxia Devices

To do hypoxia training at home, you’ll basically need a home hypoxia device (such as the MITOCUBE®) and a suitable breathing mask—which is included with the MITOCUBE®. You’ll also need a standard electrical outlet and a quiet spot where you can lie down comfortably for the duration of the session (e.g., a couch or recliner). That’s all you need: The IHHT device for home use comes fully ready to use and includes everything required for altitude training in the comfort of your own home.

This depends on your personal goals and schedule. Generally, 2–3 sessions per week are standard, especially at the beginning. Many users complete a course of about 10–15 sessions over several weeks to acclimate to the high-altitude air. Afterward, hypoxia training can be continued as needed. What’s important is consistency and that you feel comfortable during the sessions. Since the sessions are relaxing, you can use the MITOCUBE® flexibly—in the morning to energize yourself, after work to unwind, or whenever it fits into your routine.

The price depends on the selected features and individual options. The version made of high-quality plastic starts at €18,921, including VAT available; the suede-look version starting at €20,468, including VAT

Yes, many users combine at-home hypoxia training with the MITOCUBE® with mindfulness, moderate exercise, breathing exercises, or recovery routines. Please contact us if you’re interested in such combinations.

Training with a home hypoxia device is considered safe and well-tolerated, especially when—as with the MITOCUBE®—it is monitored by an automated system. The device ensures that certain safety limits are not exceeded (e.g., oxygen saturation, monitored by two pulse oximeters) and adjusts the intensity as needed. Nevertheless, certain groups of people should exercise caution: Hypoxia training is not suitable for individuals with acute viral or bacterial infections, acute headaches, intolerance to oxygen deprivation, during pregnancy, with acute cancer, or with severe heart failure. If in doubt, please consult your doctor to rule out any individual risks.

MITOVIT® is the professional hypoxia training system from COMMIT GmbH, which is primarily used in clinics, medical practices, and performance centers. The MITOCUBE®, on the other hand, was developed specifically for home users. It is more compact, lighter, and tailored to everyday needs. Both devices alternately generate high-altitude air and oxygen-enriched air based on the principle of interval hypoxia training. However, MITOVIT® offers additional professional features (such as the ability to accommodate up to 6 people) that are relevant in a clinical setting. The MITOCUBE®, on the other hand, focuses on user-friendliness and suitability for everyday use: simple operation, a sleek design, and quiet operation. In short—MITOVIT® is the high-end solution for the medical and therapeutic sector, while MITOCUBE® offers the concept of hypoxia training for home use in an accessible form.

Hypoxia training is generally suitable for a broad audience. Health-conscious people of all ages can benefit from it—from a biohacker in her mid-20s to a 60-year-old manager looking for a way to balance out a stressful daily routine. Athletes (whether recreational or competitive) incorporate high-altitude training as a complementary method to introduce new stimuli. But even if you simply want to promote your well-being and relaxation, you’re in the right target group. Since the session is passive and performed while lying down, hypoxia training is even suitable for people who cannot or do not want to engage in strenuous sports.

Yes, our experienced field representatives provide training (online—usually via Zoom). The application is very simple and intuitive.
