What is hypoxic training for home use?
Hypoxia training – also known as altitude training or intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia training (IHHT) – refers to a procedure in which the oxygen content of the air we breathe is reduced at intervals in a controlled manner. A home hypoxia device simulates high-altitude conditions by allowing the user to breathe ‘thinner’ air for short periods of time. This controlled reduction in oxygen allows the body to react in a similar way to how it would at the top of a mountain – with natural adaptive responses, but without physical exertion.
Simply put, hypoxia training enables altitude training at home: instead of travelling to high mountains or doing intensive sports, you breathe air with varying oxygen content while sitting or lying down comfortably. The method is inspired by the high-altitude air of the mountains, but takes place in a quiet environment. This means that even non-athletes and busy people can benefit from the principle of altitude training – designed for your everyday life, without any strenuous training.
How does hypoxic training work at home with the MITOCUBE?
The MITOCUBE is a compact hypoxia training device for home use that automatically simulates changing altitudes between 1,200 and 6,750 metres – comparable to an ascent from the edge of the Alps to Kilimanjaro. An oxygen-reduced air (hypoxia, e.g. 9–18% O₂) and oxygen-rich air (hyperoxia, e.g. normal room air up to 30% O₂) are inhaled at intervals via a breathing mask. These alternating oxygen phases are controlled fully automatically by the device, without the need for manual intervention. All you have to do is press ‘Start’ – the MITOCUBE takes care of the rest.
- At the start of each application, the system performs a hypoxia test.
- Your individual reaction to the high altitude air is determined, and the training automatically adapts to your personal starting level. This ensures that the session is safe, comfortable and effective.
- The treatment is carried out in a relaxed sitting or lying position and lasts around 40 minutes.
- During this time, you can listen to music or simply relax. The procedure is quiet, comfortable and requires no physical effort.
For those who are physically active, there is also a sports mode available: this allows the device to be used during moderate exercise – for example, on an exercise bike or treadmill – and makes the MITOCUBE a flexible addition to everyday hypoxic training at home.
Its modern design, intuitive operation and quiet running make the MITOCUBE an excellent companion for the home – whether as part of a regular routine or for targeted relaxation sessions in between.

The extra something for your training

Scientifically based: Based on Nobel Prize-winning research
In 2019, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to William Kaelin, Gregg Semenza, and Peter Ratcliffe. The researchers discovered how cells measure oxygen levels and trigger appropriate adjustments when changes occur. These findings form the basis for modern hypoxia training—as used in the MITOCUBE.
Under hypoxic conditions, it has been shown, among other things, that the formation of new mitochondria—the so-called powerhouses of our cells—is stimulated and functionally weakened cells are broken down more quickly. These cellular processes are specifically stimulated by alternating oxygen phases (hypoxia/hyperoxia)—a principle that MITOCUBE makes use of.

More than just technology

Safe and easy to use – hypoxia device for home use, made in Germany
Maximum elevation gain
Minute session
Minute intervals
The person undergoing training lies down relaxed on a couch and is given a personal breathing mask. During the approximately 40-minute session, you breathe oxygen-reduced “high altitude” air (hypoxia 18–9%) and oxygen-rich air (hyperoxia 30%) or normal low altitude air (21%) in alternating 3–5-minute intervals.
Athletes who want to improve their performance should do hypoxia training at a moderate level of exertion, such as on an ergometer. Set the hypoxia to 18–13% oxygen, depending on your fitness level.
For optimal safety during hypoxia training, MITOCUBE uses two pulse oximeters that record and compare the SpO2 value in parallel.

Frequently asked questions about the hypoxia device for home use
To do hypoxia training in your own home, you basically need a home hypoxia device (e.g., the MITOCUBE) and a suitable breathing mask—this is already included with the MITOCUBE. You also need a normal power connection and a quiet place where you can lie down comfortably for the duration of the session (e.g., a couch or recliner). That’s all you need: the IHHT device for home use is completely ready for use and comes with everything you need for altitude training in your own home.
This depends on your personal goals and schedule. Generally, 2–3 sessions per week are common, especially at the beginning. Many users complete a course of about 10–15 sessions over several weeks to get used to the high altitude air. After that, hypoxia training can be continued as needed. It is important to be consistent and to feel comfortable during use. Since the sessions are relaxing, you can use the MITOCUBE flexibly—in the morning to activate yourself, after work to relax, or whenever it fits into your routine.
The price depends on the selected features and individual options. The high-quality plastic version is available from €18,921 incl. VAT, while the suede-look version is available from €20,468 incl. VAT.

Yes, many users combine hypoxic training at home with MITOCUBE with mindfulness, moderate exercise, breathing training, or regenerative routines. Please contact us if you are interested in such combinations.
Training with a home hypoxia device is considered safe and well tolerated, especially when monitored by an automatic system, as is the case with MITOCUBE. The device ensures that certain safety limits are not exceeded (e.g., oxygen saturation using two pulse oximeters) and adjusts the intensity as needed. Nevertheless, certain groups of people should be cautious: Hypoxia training is not suitable for people with acute viral and bacterial infections, acute headaches, intolerance to oxygen deprivation, pregnancy, acute cancer, or severe heart failure. If in doubt, please consult your doctor to rule out individual risks.
MITOVIT® is the professional hypoxia training system from COMMIT GmbH, which is primarily used in clinics, medical practices, and performance centers. The MITOCUBE, on the other hand, was developed specifically for private users. It is more compact, lighter, and tailored to everyday needs. Both devices alternately generate high-altitude air and oxygen-rich air according to the principle of interval hypoxia training. However, MITOVIT® has additional professional functions (such as the ability to accommodate more than 6 people) that are relevant in a practice setting. The MITOCUBE, on the other hand, focuses on user-friendliness and suitability for everyday use: simple operation, slim design, and quiet operation. In short, MITOVIT® is the high-end solution for the medical-therapeutic sector, while MITOCUBE offers the concept of hypoxia training for the home in an accessible form.
Hypoxia training is generally suitable for a broad target group. Health-conscious people of all ages can be inspired by it—from the 25-year-old biohacker to the 60-year-old manager looking for a balance to their stressful everyday life. Athletes (whether recreational or competitive) integrate altitude training as a complementary method to provide new stimuli. But even if you simply want to promote your well-being and relaxation, you are in the right target group. Since the application is passive and performed while lying down, hypoxia training is even suitable for people who cannot or do not want to engage in strenuous sports.
Yes, our experienced sales representatives will provide training (online, usually via Zoom). The application is very simple and intuitive.
