Stress – the greatest health risk of the 21st century
What the WHO says about stress
The WHO has declared stress to be the greatest health risk of the 21st century.
People perceive stress differently. The ‘father of stress research’, the Austrian-Canadian physician Hans Selye, describes stress as psychological and physical reactions to external and internal stimuli as well as to pressures that are perceived as unpleasant, threatening or overwhelming.
These can be the ever-increasing pressure to perform at work, conflicts in the family or with a partner, arguments with neighbours, heavy traffic, unemployment, poverty, but also illnesses and physical ailments.
Most people experience all of these situations as stress. However, the main problem here is not the stress itself. It is the biological stress response of the autonomic nervous system, which has not yet adapted to the realities of our fast-paced lives.
As a result, the necessary balance in the body’s regulation can become unbalanced, potentially causing illness with sometimes serious consequences for health. ‘Evolution is a constant process of adaptation between humans and their environment,’ says Erich Seifritz, Director of the Psychiatric University Hospital Zurich. ‘But currently, the environment is changing so rapidly that our evolutionary development has no chance of keeping up.’
What is stress resistance and why is it so important?
Stress is an unavoidable part of our lives and affects us in different ways. Whether due to professional pressure, family commitments or external influences, our body often reacts to these stresses with physical and psychological symptoms. A central role is played by so-called stress resistance, i.e. the body’s ability to cope with stressful situations and maintain its inner balance.
Stress resistance is crucial to long-term health. When the natural balance is disturbed by constant stress, the autonomic nervous system can become overstimulated, leading to an imbalance. This can have serious health consequences, including exhaustion, weakening of the immune system and various stress-related illnesses.
